Johann Bolljahn was born in 1862 in what is now Usedom. He became a primary school teacher and taught at the Protestant German School in Tōkyō from 1889. In 1898, he became head of the newly founded German Language School in Seoul, making him one of the fathers of German teaching in Korea. He returned to Germany in 1919.
